Fortunately, there are few orthodontic problems that need immediate attention. Most of the discomforts of wearing braces occur during the initial stages of getting used to the braces. Something may occur that needs to be addressed and we hope that the following suggestions may be of help to you.

Problem: Poky wire
Solution: Apply some orthodontic wax on the poky wire.

Problem: Shifting wire
Solution: You can reposition the wire by pushing on the long end of the wire. You may use the handle end of a spoon or the nail side of your finger.

Problem: Tie off/sleeve open
Solution: If the wire is still in the bracket, then you are okay. If the wire is poking and causing irritation, then apply wax to the poky area.

Problem: Loose band, bracket or appliance
Solution: Keep the area very clean and call the office the next business day to schedule a repair appointment. If the band or bracket is off the wire, please save it and bring it with you to the office. Apply wax, if needed.

Problem: Sore lip/cheek
Solution: Apply wax to the area that is causing the sore. You may want to rinse with warm salt water to help the healing process.

Problem: Discomfort from appliance placement or adjustment
Solution: You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers as directed. A warm wash cloth or heating pad may reduce soreness in the jaw area.

Problem: Lost separators
Solution: Most patients lose a separator during treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

Please call the office the next business day so that we can schedule a time to permanently take care of the problem. If any of the above suggestions do not help, or you have a different kind of emergency, please feel free to call the office!
